Come join us at Bird in Hand on the evening of December 8th for the winter edition of Charm City Spec! For this edition of Baltimore's speculative fiction reading series, you'll hear from Leah Ning, Jo Miles, Edward Daschle, Marie Croke, and David D. Levine! We are all in for a treat.
Leah Ning lives in northern Virginia with her husband and their adorable fluffy overlords. She is the managing editor at Apex Book Company. Some of the uncomfortable things she writes can be found in Apex Magazine, PodCastle, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and Human Monsters. You can find her on Twitter and Bluesky @LeahNing and on her website, leahning.com.
Jo Miles is a Maryland writer of optimistic science fiction and fantasy, and the author of the space opera trilogy The Gifted of Brennex. Their short stories have appeared in Fantasy & Science Fiction, Strange Horizons, Lightspeed, and more. They were nominated for a WSFA Small Press Award for their story "The Longest Season in the Garden of the Tea Fish" in Strange Horizons.
Edward Daschle (he/him) grew up in the Pacific Northwest, where he spent his time reading, rock climbing, and teaching rock climbing. He moved across the country to just outside Washington D.C. to teach and study fiction in the University of Maryland’s MFA program in creative writing. The stories he writes often take on themes of queerness and authenticity, characters searching for how they can or should live their lives. His stories appear or are forthcoming in Grim & Gilded, Stoneboat Literary Journal, and Apex Magazine’s Robotic Ambitions anthology among other venues.
Marie Croke is an award-winning fantasy and science-fiction writer living in Maryland with her family, all of whom like to scribble messages in her notebooks when she’s not looking. She is a graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop, and her stories can be found in over a dozen magazines, including Apex, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Daily Science Fiction, Zooscape, Cast of Wonders, Diabolical Plots, and Fireside. She has worked as a slush editor and first reader for multiple magazines, including khōréō and Dark Matter, and her reviews can be found in Apex Magazine. She is currently an Acquisitions Editor for Dark Matter INK. Her hobbies include crochet, birding, and aerial dance.
David D. Levine is the author of Andre Norton Nebula Award winning novel Arabella of Mars, sequels Arabella and the Battle of Venus and Arabella the Traitor of Mars, and over fifty SF and fantasy stories. His story “Tk’Tk’Tk” won the Hugo, and he has been shortlisted for awards including the Hugo, Nebula, Campbell, and Sturgeon. His latest novel is The Kuiper Belt Job.
